Breathing Easier

September 22nd through the 29th is National Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis Awareness Week. Pulmonary Fibrosis is a debilitating disease marked by progressive scarring of the lungs that gradually interferes with a person's ability to breathe. There is no cure, and currently there is NO FDA approved treatment. The disease is fatal, within 5 to 7 years of diagnosis. Approximately 128,000 people in the United States have IPF, and an estimated 48,000 new cases develop each year. You can learn more about PF at The Coalition for Pulmonary Fibrosis' website.

Of all the days on all the fields where American soldiers have fought, the most terrible by almost any measure was September 17, 1862. The battle waged on that date, close by Antietam Creek at Sharpsburg in western Maryland, took a human toll never exceeded on any other single day in the nation's history. So intense and sustained was the violence, a man recalled, that for a moment in his mind's eye the very landscape around him turned red.

Stephen W. Sears,Landscape Turned Red: The Battle of Antietam

In the days leading up to the Battle of Antietam, Confederate General Robert E. Lee concentrated his invading army outside Sharpsburg, Maryland. Victorious at Manassas in August, Lee's Army of Northern Virginia hoped to garner new recruits and supplies in Maryland, a slave-holding state that remained in the Union. However, Union General George B. McClellan who closely pursued his rival enjoyed a strategic advantage. A scout had discovered a copy of the Confederate battle plan and the contents of Lee's Special Order Number 191 were well-known to his rival.

At dawn on September 17th, 1862 the hills of Sharpsburg thundered with artillery and musket fire as the Northern and Southern armies struggled for possession of the Miller farm cornfield. For three hours, the battle lines swept back and forth across the field.

By mid-morning, the Confederate line was established along a country lane called Sunken Road. The soldiers crouched behind its high banks, unleashing heavy fire upon advancing Union troops. Eventually, the overwhelming number of Northerners broke the Confederate line. As the Southerners spun to defend their position, the Union troops rained bullets lengthwise down the lane onto them. The road came to be known as Bloody Lane because of the tragic toll of death suffered there.

The Southerners retreated towards Sharpsburg, covered by cannon fire from General Stonewall Jackson's artillery. The Union troops fell back in the face of the cannon fire and failed to pursue the Confederates.
Cautious to a fault, McClellan failed to advance quickly on the Confederates who had reached the town. Eventually, General Ambrose Burnside attacked, but was repelled by the ragged Southerners and newly-arrived troops under Major General A. P. Hill.

By nightfall, Confederates occupied the town of Sharpsburg ending the single bloodiest day in American history. Over 23,000 men were killed, wounded, or missing in action. The next day, Lee began his retreat across the Potomac River.

Thirteen Things Morgan did today

1…. I woke at 4am in order to wake the baby. He had a hearing test at 8:30 and needed to be ready for a nap at that time. Not bad actually. He woke before my alarm went off.

2. I critiqued a few dialogue scenes for the Romance Divas Dialogue Contest. Favorite Line?

3. Ate breakfast...a waffle with crunchy peanut butter and light syrup. YUM

4. Drove less than 5 miles...in about 30 min. It was a good traffic day!

5. Met the audiology tech, Adam and watched him perform the BAER test, an Auditory Brain-Stem Response test. Results in tomorrow. This test is recommended. There are no signs or symptoms leading us to believe that Sean has any hearing loss.

6. Paid the parking attendant $5.

7. Returned home and slept for MAYBE 15 minutes...after eating leftover Pizza Hut pizza. Really greasy, yummy stuff. Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

8. Sean's infant educator and vision specialist came to the house at one o'clock. Despite having only woken up a half an hour earlier after being sedated, Sean did really well. His session was enjoyably laidback while he ate and we talked about him.

9. I walked with the two little ones to the elementary school to pick up numbers 1 and 2. The hills are atrocious but I can proudly say, I'm still in better shape now than I was a year ago when I did that walk for the first time. YUCK, I thought I was going to DIE!
Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket Perhaps it's not that bad...

10. I made chocolate peanut butter chip cookies. You know, for the kids.
Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

11. OH MY GOSH...I almost forgot. Received the LETTER in the mail and called my HUBBIE. He didn't suggest I open it...didn't say he would be home early to open it...I quietly AND SUBMISSIVELY put the letter up where I couldn't see it or think about it... Yeah, right!

12. Read some of High Noon by Nora Roberts. I'm liking it, THANK GOD! There's always that concern that the next book won't be as good.

13. Watched another entertaining episode of Psych.Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket And laughed a ton.

Sometimes the fire is not burning

After unsuccessfully trying to blog about what's on my nightstand...followed by staring at my screen for another ten minutes. I'm officially stopping.

When is enough enough?

I've written 251 words today - that's 51 words over my daily goal.

That's enough...for now.

Maybe if I go eat and rest my eyes, I'll be able to put some more words on the screen.

Here's a picture to bring thought to your day...
Hope and Rebuilding.

Another quiet Sunday afternoon...
After brunch with the family and FIL, I should totally be writing...dude.

But I'm sort of surfing around, double checking my email, and stopping at a few blogs.

It's an ideal day...
Don't we all live for those warm end of summer days when the entire family is home? With my Hubby working on the car and my little fans scattered about the house doing one or another thing, I'm happy.

I might call a girlfriend....
write another scene from my WW2 novel...
sit outside under the tree and watch a real man get down and dirty with car grease...

I might drink a beer...or a glass of wine.
I might even READ!
Holy Moley...what am I still doing sitting here?

Have a great day.
Morgan

September 8, 2007

Despite the posted date.
This is my history lessons for today.
My desire to get a new blog up led me to THIS DAY IN HISTORY...

A City in Turmoil, a City Reborn.
Hope for the next generations...
--on the anniversary of the worst storm to overwhelm the southern Texas Coast.

An island washed away (gathered from Galveston Newspapers Inc. copyright 2007)

A Galveston Daily News reporter in 1900 said the story of the Sept. 8, 1900, hurricane could never truly be written.

Linda Macdonald's grandfather said nothing could ever make him forget the sounds of that night.

And for many, no words could ever be spoken again about the deadly hurricane that reshaped the Gulf Coast forever.

As Galvestonians and the rest of the country mark the centennial of the deadliest hurricane in U.S. history, its story continues to linger in the minds of virtually everyone who lives along a coast. It is the reminder of what can happen when the winds blow and the tides rise along the hurricane-prone coasts of America.

Its tale of death, devastation and eventual recovery is close to the hearts of Galvestonians. And as its centennial anniversary comes and goes, and its stories are passed on again, the 1900 Storm will become part of the history of another generation.

'The storm'

For locals, any reference to "the storm" is obvious. If someone says a house survived the storm, there is no doubt it predates Sept. 8, 1900.

If people say they had family who died or survived the storm, there is no doubt that they are referring to a family history that goes back more than 100 years.

For in Galveston, "the storm" always refers to the hurricane that tore across Galveston on Sept. 8, 1900, and left the city in ruins.

Those who managed, either by sheer luck or the grace of God, to survive the storm faced the challenge of moving forward.

In his memoirs, meteorologist Isaac Cline referred to the morning after the storm as "a most beautiful day."

It was indeed a sunny, warm day, the kind of day people came to Galveston for at the turn of the century. But few visitors would walk the sandy shores for months after the infamous hurricane.

Instead, bodies of the dead that were improperly buried at sea washed ashore on those beaches, leaving even more treacherous work for the cleanup crews.

The storm left behind a legacy that extends across the country. As families moved from the island, they carried with them the story of that night.

Updating and Excerpting...

Hmmm. I visited my good East Coast friend from Romance Divas, Bria at her Blog today. When I recieved her reciprocating post here, I realized I hadn't posted in a few days and yuck what a bummer for her to have to read that BORING Goal post. Bleck.

So for the Pre-Thursday Thirteen, I'm going to give up an excerpt from my current WIP[work in progress]. I've mentioned the World War Two story I've got going in previous posts but I'll give a little synop anyway.

In case you don't feel like reading the entire bit of mediocre conglomeration of words, I'll tell you now. I'm looking for a comment from you. A Best line or Favorite monologue, a first line or last line...a last line written from your oldest unfinished manuscript[oh, that'll be fun, don't you think?]

Just so you know.
the working title is... LOST IN SPIES :D
The cheezy police really need to get crackin.
[am I stalling? Yes.]
I'm putting myself on the line here, People!

Darn I really hate losing the formatting...

Anyhoo.
Margaret[teacher/translator] runs to catch up with her hubby, Mark[pilot]. But he's already gone. She has made a decision to word within the war effort and holds some doubt and guilt at not "running it by" the old man. ;) it is 1941, summer.

~~~~~~~
“[newspaperman] Ed! How are you? I didn’t expect to see you down here.” Margaret stopped at the end of the long corridor that led to the captain’s office. Dim lights cast an artificial glow on the glossy yellow tiles that lined the floor and sent shadows over the gray cement walls. Wood framed pictures of former officers and soldiers hung in military presicion down the length of the wall. A quick glance told of loyalty and pride.
“Miss Pennington, how are you?” His soft-spoken words held genuine affection for her. He stood as if the world rested on his shoulders. His already slight build seemed to close in on him and there were dark circles under his eyes. They twinkled, though, beneath the bushy eyebrows and the dark, long eyelashes.
“It’s Mrs. Danbury now.”
He stood straighter and his grin widened. “Well, now. That’s wonderful. Congratulations.”
“Thank you.” Noise from planes flying overhead rumbled within the walls. The ceiling trembled. “My goodness,” she said. “They’re close, aren’t they?”
“They’ve been flying circles round this place for days. It’s good to have Mark back.”
She blushed, though she didn’t know why. “I’m actually looking for him. Do you know where I can find him?”
“Check with the Captain. He’ll be able to tell you.”
She tilted her head and studied his face. Knowing, that’s what is was, and weary. She didn’t press him for the information. “Thanks Ed. You take care, okay?”
“You too, Mrs. Danbury.”
An argument was reaching its peak as she reached the door to Captain whathisface’s office. She hesitated disturbing an obviously busy man right now. He had better things to do than look after one uncertain female.
Be careful, Love.
Mark’s words once again gave her the strength she needed. Pushing her shoulders back and holding her head high, she walked into the small brightly lit room.
“I don’t care how many engines need new fuel lines!”
Margaret halted, physically affected by the volume and intensity in the big man’s voice.
“Get it taken care of…NOW!” He slammed the phone down and shuffled through the papers on his desk, completely unaware of her presence.
She cleared her throat at the same time ran her hands down the sides of her skirt. They were damp with nervousness.
“What do you want?” he barked.
“I’m sorry. I—I’m looking for my husband.” Her voice trembled and he was staring at her before she’d said the word sorry. An itchy heat crawled up her neck and she wanted, with everything in her, to turn around and run.
…but then, he smiled and she was immediately reminded of her grandfather. His shock of white hair fell across his damp forehead and his blue eyes, at first cold and hard turned a warm gray. “My dear, you must be lost.”
“No. I don’t think so. I’m inquiring as to the whereabouts of my husband, Mark Danbury.”
A light went on in his face and gentleness graced his countenance. At the same time, she knew right away that Mark was gone.
“He left just after noon. He’s still in Great Britain but he’s unavailable for the time being.” His conciliatory expression wasn’t reassuring. “It’s regulation, Mrs. Danbury. I can’t have my men distracted in the line of duty.”
“Of course. I just… I wonder if you could get a message to him?”
Captain whatshisface nodded.
“A colleague contacted me this morning. I’m going to be helping out with the war effort. I’m going to be helping my students travel to the country where they will stay through the summer.”
“Very well, then.” He handed her a small pad of paper. “write your missive here. I’ll see he gets it.”
“Oh thank you!” Her stomach stopped churning and her heart slowed to a normal pace. “I just feel so badly that we didn’t get a chance to discuss this. I don’t want him to worry.”
He took the paper from her and folded it in half. It slid into his breast pocket and her eyes followed it. She hadn’t thought to leave even a small love note with her husband’s things when he left. Tears unexpectedly pooled behind her eyes. How silly. She’d been fine all day long. She wasn’t going to cry now!
“Thank you,” she whispered and turned to leave.
Question of the week.
Do I talk about goals?
Do I do the Friday Five I missed?
Do I write a letter to my aunt who gave me a maple syrup dispenser shaped like a rooster?
Blogging...I haven't talked about my WIP lately so we'll go with question number one.
My Goals.
Today I wrote 427 words.
My goal was 200...
200 words a day for the time being.
I'm not trying to raise my self-esteem, I just don't want alot of stress.
So this is good. My World War II novella has hit 10k and now it's just over that.
I'm really excited because I can see a finish.
A light at the end of the tunnel.
A Happily Ever After for Mark Danbury and Margaret Pennington (now, Danbury)...can you believe it?! They're married!
Of course you can. What's the big deal, right?
It'll be a harder sell... that's for sure.
*sigh* too bad, they love being married.
It's bad enough I seperated them from each other in the first 500 words.
So, now you know a little more.
;) Let's hear what your goals are...
We're all in this together.
-Morgan St. John
Thirteen Pen Names before Morgan St. John
1. Montana Grey, still my favorite alternative even if I don't write westerns.
2. Rose Matthews, a combo of children's names...
3. Bailey Morgan, apparently too modern or fadish. Besides, I like drinking Bailey's so I can only imagin someone calling me a getting a 'yes please!' in reply!
4. Dakota Morgan, Does it say stripper to you?
5. Cait(y) Madison, my sister is Kate...I don't think my DH would appreciate people walking around calling me that. Love the spelling though! and love the Madison.
6. Harley Matthews, okay...it is a little tiny bit too fadish, but it's like the me I'd love to have the balls to be.
7. Tracy Pearl - NO! I shiver just typing it and wonder how it ever got on the list!
8. Magnolia, no last name...now there's an idea.
9. Fiona Baker, I do love to bake and have considered opening a pie shop but that name on one of my books? Just isn't going to happen.
10. Magdalynne, I think I have a story started with this name as a character. Seems like the only reason is would end up on a pen name list. Like the name...but for characters only!
11. RoseLee Morgan, another family name combo, a little too southern for me. Not that I won't someday live in the south. It's just as likely as me living in the midwest or the west...or the north for that matter.
12. Morgan Matthews, PHEW, a mouthful.
13. finally, the WINNER, Morgan St. John - I really love this name. Family Combo and classy to boot.
This is my son
The picture here is kind of stinky... not very good resolution, is it? That's the DH with our fourth and youngest. Sean. Sean Didymus was born blind. He has no left eye and a smaller one on the right. The technical terms are anopthalmia and micropthalmia--an being without and micro meaning small. He is the most beautiful almost two-year-old Sean in the whole world. Happy could very well have been his middle name. Disadvantage has not occurred to him and I plan on keeping it that way.
God gave us four absolutely perfect children.
Thank You...Goodnight.
2nd weekly Question of the Week
I have to put that...2nd weekly. It's a sign of a habit forming.
So the question...what are your habits, good or bad? Give me your best or your worst...
you can even post anonymously!
I'll be the one UNanonymous habit girl.
And it all started when I was very young...
JK.
I sucked my thumb from infancy into childhood. We're talking after five...maybe even into the sevens. I'd have to ask my mom. I used my pointer finger as a hook over my nose to keep everything in place. Following that was the nail biting. I still occasionally do that. At nineteen, I started smoking. For ten years I told myself I was going to quit(that's not exactly true as I loved doing it)...Finally when I was pregnant with number four, I succeeded...most likely thanks to the Man Fan. He quit that year too. I still have an urge for one every once in a great while but...there's no one to bum a smoke from. ;) thanks goodness!
What about you?
Do you crave chocolate?
Do you write love letters regularly?
Do you drive only in the left hand lane?
Do you have to eat from your plate in a clockwise rotation?
Do you snort when you laugh?
What is your annoying habit?
Inquiring minds want to know.
Friday Five
I found a wonderful site with Friday Five questions...
Don't forget to hop on over there and check them out as well.
Five Questions then:
1) What were your after-school hours usually like when you were in high school?
Yikes, it's been a while... in the fall there was band. One day, at band camp?...
Otherwise, homework...friends? I must have had friends. LOL I don't remember.
2) What are the first moments like when you finally get home after a long day?
I'm a stay at home mom. I have the joy of not coming home to a loud, messed up, dinner half cooked household. LOL Poor DH!
3) Where do your thoughts normally turn after the December/January holidays have passed?
Definitely towards a couple of months of peaceful, quiet down time. I love those months between Christmas and Easter when no one goes out, holidays are scarce and kids go to school. I get alot of writing done! My first manuscript was started and completed in the months of March and April. =)
4) When did you last allow someone to cut in front of you in line?
I'm always letting people cut in front of me. I think it's a matter of Karma(did I spell that right?) or you could call it Points to Heaven depending on your belief... In the car and the grocery store are the most cutable places.
5) What are you going to do right after you finish answering these questions?
I'm heading over to my writing group Romance Divas so that they'll all come visit and leave their own comments on the Friday Five!
Thanks you guys over at Wordpress and Friday Five!
